Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Information about artificial intelligence and resources for researching AI.

Welcome to the AI guide

This research guide is here to help you learn more about Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is a rapidly growing and changing field, so this guide will grow and change as well.

  • The AI at VCSU page provides links to information published by the university's IT department.
  • The Learn More About AI page has collections of both library resources and resources from around the web for your research needs.
  • The AI Research Tools page covers the AI tools currently in library databases as well as information about other AI tools.
  • The Citing AI page has links to the VCSU citation guide's Citing AI sections.

Types of AI

Although it seems like AI spontaneously appeared one day, AI tools have been an integral part of our lives for years. There is a difference between what the tech industry calls "traditional AI" and the generative AI that is the new big thing. MIT's xPRO blog, The Curve, explains that traditional AI is able to complete tasks based on already existing information, but can't create a new output, while generative AI takes information and offers a new piece of content (2024).

Traditional AI tools include recommendation algorithms on social media, Siri or Alexa, predictive text, and even the spam filter in your email.

Generative AI tools include ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Dall-E, and Grok

This research guide is focused mostly on generative AI topics, but the resources on the Learn More About AI page can also be used to research other types of AI tools.
