Reference Services at Allen Memorial Library

Research Consultations

A library is a place for entertainment, learning, and, most importantly, a destination for research resources and assistance. At Allen Memorial Library, our professionally-trained librarians offer outstanding research help. Whether you are writing a short essay or working on an extensive dissertation, our librarians are happy to help you! Feel free to stop by the Reference Desk, give us a call, or send us an email. It will be our pleasure to respond promptly to your request.

If you will require an in-depth research consultation, we strongly encourage making an appointment. To do so, contact the Library by visiting our contact page linked below.

Citation Help

Properly formatting an MLA or APA citation may be difficult, but you do not have to struggle alone! Librarians are available during normal library hours, and they are glad to assist all library users with their citation work. Outside of normal hours, our Citation Guide may provide detailed information about APA and MLA styles, with links to outstanding citation guides and other resources.

Self-Guided

We understand that not every schedule is compatible with ours. That is why the librarians at Allen Memorial Library have constructed a number of research guides and video tutorials to guide you through many aspects of university-level research, 24-7. Here is a brief description of each:
  • Research Guides: Hand-picked resources and useful information populate these guides. Guides are broken down into several subject areas.
  • YouTube Tutorials: The Library maintains a number of video tutorials on a wide range of topics. Nearly all of these videos demonstrate how to use a Library resource, or how to access a particular service online. If you don't see the information you need, please let us know!
  • Viking Voyager - Research 101: Not confident about your research skills? Take this self-guided course about all things college research. Learn how to find information in various formats, how to cite the information appropriately, and how to frame a research question.

Genealogy & Obituary Assistance

The Library offers limited genealogical research and obituary location assistance. For more in-depth assistance, please contact the Barnes County Historical Society and the Valley City Barnes County Public Library. Here are some of the services we provide for the genealogical researcher:

Valley City Times-Record: Users are welcome to browse our complete run of the Valley City Times-Record. Library staff are willing to locate an item or items in the Times-Record, under the condition that the user knows the exact date that the item was printed. Because the Times-Record has not yet been electronically indexed, searching for an article without specific date parameters may take hours of staff time. Consequently, fulfilling Times-Record copy requests is left up to staff discretion.

Please note that the Library does offer an Online Obituary Database, though the contents are incomplete and are not continuously maintained.

Ancestry Library: Ancestry Library is an online genealogy collection that contains more than 4,000 databases and 1.5 billion names. Its collections include obituaries from major newspapers, U.S. Census records, local directories, and much more. This collection is easy-to-use, but is only accessible through a North Dakota library. Our Library staff would be glad to assist you in using this resource.
