Wondering how you can get really good at finding things on the Web? Interested in INFORMATION and how it affects our lives?  Then you must think about a Library Media & Information Science Minor!! It is an easy minor to get because you can pick up many of the hours either at night (over the IVN network) during short summer workshops, or (coming soon) over the Web!!! There is some scholarship money available, too! Check us out!

Library Media & Information
Science Minor
(20 credit hours)

LMIS 250: Introduction to Libraries & Information Science
First course. Offered Fall, every year. (2 credit hours)

LMIS 360 Media Collection Development
Offered spring, odd years. Alternates with administration. (3 cr. hr.)

LMIS 365 Cataloging and Classification of Media Collections
Spring, odd years. Pre-requisite of a library course or cataloging experience. (4 cr. hr.)

LMIS 370 Reference Sources and Services
Fall, odd years. Alternates with Young Adult Literature. (3 credit hours)

LMIS 430 Administration of the School Library Media Center
Spring, even years. Alternates with Media Collection Development. (3 credit hours)

LMIS 460 Practicum
Should be one of the last courses taken. Offered every semester (2 credit hours)

One literature course is required. It may be either Children's or Young Adult.

EDUC 330 Children's Literature
Fall or Spring semester. (3 credit hours) or

LMIS 350 Young Adult Literature and Media
Fall, even years. (3 credit hours)

VCSU Class Schedule 2000-2002
All library classes except the Practicum are offered on IVN (Interactive Video Network). The Practicum is offered every semester, including summers. EDUC 330, Children's Literature, is offered fall and spring semesters. The IVN classes are taught either from VCSU or from MaSU (Mayville State University). If there are not enough students for IVN classes, they will still be offered on each campus. Both schools offer library courses on their campuses in the summer

Requirements

   School Enrollment Level of Credential Course Hours
   K-12: 25-100  LM04 Librarian Designate  8 basic semester
   K-12: 101-250  LM03 Librarian  16 basic semester
   K-12: 251 plus  LM02 Library Media Specialist  16 basic semester + 10 AV semester

 

 

 

 

 

 K-12 Certification: Completion of the Library Media minor (20 semester hours) and teacher certification by the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction qualifies students as Librarians, the LM03 certification. However, electives must be chosen with care in order to qualify for a higher certification, LM02. The 10 semester hours of audiovisual courses required for an LM02 must be courses accepted by the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction. Students should work with the Director of the Library Minor early in their program to plan an appropriate course of study.
